Steel represents a very large percentage of total imports at the Port of New Orleans. This being said, the rail infrastructure at the Port is highly developed for the shipment of steel. NOPB's experience moving this product is second-to-none. With our access to high-quality coil gondolas, flatcars, centerbeams, standard gondolas and boxcars, we are able to support the large volumes of various types of steel products moving from New Orleans throughout North America.

New Orleans is a large entry point for aluminum, copper, lead and zinc products, as it is the only Gulf port with approved London Metals Exchange (LME) warehouses, allowing traders to place these cargoes onto commodity markets instead of selling direct to consumers. NOPB is well-prepared to service the needs of the direct-sell and the shipments from LME facilities. There is ample boxcar supply in New Orleans and lead-time to obtain this equipment is short because NOPB actually has its own fleet of cars in addition to the ample supply provided by our connecting rail lines.
