Imported Wood Products and NOPB
The Port of New Orleans is a large importer of wood products, most of which originates in China, Indonesia, Latin America, and Malaysia. The majority of what arrives at New Orleans is plywood, which can be transported by rail quite easily to points in the interior.
Boxcars are used to transport imported plywood in order to keep the product dry. Because the NOPB has no weight or height restrictions, the latest in boxcar equipment can be utilized to transport this product. Boxcars with capacities to load 48, 54, 60, and 70 crates with single or double doors can be easily obtained for loading.
Using railcars to transport wood products can save significantly over the competition; one boxcar holds the equivalent of 3-4 trucks. If your inland destination does not have direct access to rail, NOPB will work with you to find appropriate distribution centers near the ultimate destination capable of unloading boxcars, storing product and trucking to your customer.
Positioning your inventory inland closer to your typical market areas and closer to your regular customers may allow you service these accounts more responsively and effectively. NOPB is ready to help.
If your wood products arrive via container, New Orleans offers on-dock COFC service from the port to various inland destinations in conjunction with the Canadian National Railway. Our on-dock rail ramp allows containers to arrive loaded heavier than legal US road weights. This allows customers to save on ocean freight by loading containers to their full weight capacity.
If you are looking to ship product into New Orleans or need storage of your material, we have partners that are able to warehouse and transload wood products outside of the port facilities. All of these facilities have rail sidings and regularly ship freight via boxcar or flatcar. They will provide truck transport to their facility via flatbed or container and provide flexible services, logistical support, and longer-term storage for all types of products.
